NCC 2022 Preview and Adoption Dates

The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has released the 1st stage of the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022, covering all three volumes, two new referenced standards and most of the amendments to the NCC. There is a significant number of changes that have been introduced in the NCC 2022 including introduction of the new livable housing requirements, and the new residential energy efficiency and condensation mitigation requirements.

What happens next

Building Ministers are scheduled to meet in late August 2022 and will consider NCC 2022, including final analysis from the ABCB on proposed improvements to residential energy efficiency provisions for NCC 2022. It is expected that the adoption date of NCC 2022 by state and territories will be further delayed from 1 September 2022 to be not earlier than 1 October 2022.

Apart from the major changes mentioned above, other changes are included for early childhood centres, fire safety of external walls, waterproofing, weatherproofing, falls for floor wastes, number of exits, plumbing.

Each state and territory will bring NCC 2022 into effect in their own time and manner using their own regulatory regimes. Further information about NCC 2022 will be available soon.
