The Building Code of Australia (BCA) provides a single set of building rules applied across all states and territories. This single set of rules is enforced in each jurisdiction by their own acts of parliament.
The BCA is primarily a life safety code, meaning that its intent is to ensure the safety of occupants, neighbouring property and also emergency services personnel. It therefore must be understood that the requirements of the BCA may sometimes be different to that of the insurance industry, for example and the level of protection that can be provided may be much higher than the BCA, for reasons other than legislative compliance.
