Craig’s Blog: 10% Increase on Dust Disease Levy in NSW

It would appear that from 30 June 2012 the way GST is applied to the NSW Dust Disease Levy (DDL) has changed. As we know, GST is included in the premium rates in NSW, however the assumption has always been that the same applied to the DDL rates, which it would appear it shouldn’t have been.

This has been rectified by WorkCover NSW now publishing the DDL rate with GST. So whilst most DDL rates didn’t change this year, they have gone up by 10% because GST is now applied to them.

As WorkCover rounds to three decimal places, these are

sometimes being rounded up. For example a DDL rate of 0.025% is now being charged by WorkCover at 0.028% which is a 12% increase, not 10%.

For most companies

this won’t make a big change, as the DDL is only a very small component of the premium (i.e. it will increase premiums for most companies by less than half a percent), however it is change that policy holders should be aware of.
