Ammonia is an efficient refrigerant and its use in industrial facilities is growing due to its environmental benefits compared to alternatives. However, RiskTech has found that the hazards associated with the use of ammonia may not be fully appreciated by business owners. Not only is this
toxic gas a health hazard since it is corrosive to the skin, eyes and lungs, it also has the potential to contribute to severe property damage when refrigeration systems don’t have the appropriate protection against fire and explosion. RiskTech has released a technical bulletin
that contains useful engineering practices which may apply to many ammonia refrigeration facilities.
The nature of this risk is demonstrated in the following incidents:
- Ammonia Explosion at Ice Plant– Building damages of $300,000
